In early October, five thousand school students across Austria went on strike against the government’s recent racist hijab ban in schools, for girls under 14. As part of the strike, demonstrations took place in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz, Linz and Bregenz. There were also rallies in Salzburg and Klagenfurt.
At its height, the movement this weekend saw the French masses fight the police to within 300 meters of the steps of the Elysée Palace. We can only imagine the tension in the president’s office. Across the country a million, perhaps two million people were mobilized. The ruling class has been shaken to its core.
Last week we saw the youth movement that is sweeping Europe arrive in Italy. On Friday, October 16, there were student marches across the country, from the major cities—where squares were filled with several thousand young people—to smaller towns.
