In recent weeks, Americans have been scandalized by two right-wing provocations in Indiana. First there was the case of Purvi Patel, a woman sentenced to twenty years in prison for so-called “feticide,” an invented crime defined by Indiana state law as ending a pregnancy deliberately.
Then there is the state’s new anti-LGBTQ bill, known politely as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which has rightly provoked widespread outrage and disgust. The bill ostensibly protects the religious rights of corporations. But even in this official format, its class nature is apparent. In reality, it is designed to give businesses the right to arbitrarily reject customers of unwanted backgrounds, especially those who identify as LGBTQ.

Last night the right-wing leadership of the British Labour Party led Labour to a resounding electoral defeat. Trying to out-Tory the Tories, Labour lost its appeal to large numbers of youth and workers, and found itself outflanked to the left and crushed by upstart nationalists in Scotland. Tens of thousands of people again flooded streets across the country to protest against racism and police brutality. These once-routine and largely unrecognized murders are now churning up powerful forces long dormant in the womb of society. The movement expresses the deep-seated discontent of several generations of Americans who have been sold out and betrayed by a system they were led to believe should work for everyone, but which in reality only works for a tiny minority. As increasing numbers of Americans draw the conclusion that it’s not just a few rotten apples in this or that police department, but a system diseased and rotten to its core, the tragic death of yet another young black man at the hands of the state was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Last week several thousand gold miners marched in Athens against the government (the media claimed there were 6,000 protesters, although this is visibly an exaggeration). They were demonstrating against the government’s plans to close the Skouries gold mine in Chalkidiki, owned by the Canadian mining company El Dorado and also partly by Greek investors . . . The miners’ opposition to the closure of the mine was then taken up and manipulated by reactionaries.
