Last month, Donald Trump proposed that America take over Gaza, expel all two million Palestinians living there, and transform it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” If implemented, his lunatic plan would be nothing short of a new Nakba, bringing the reactionary Zionist dream of a “Greater Israel” with an overwhelmingly Jewish population closer to fruition.
Duplicitous liberal moralizing
For 16 months, liberals never tired of lecturing us about Israel’s “right to self-defense.” They labelled everybody who stood in solidarity with the Palestinians as “antisemites.” But with Trump at American imperialism’s helm, these same liberals have suddenly discovered a passion for human rights and international law. As an example, take the letter to Trump signed by 144 House Democrats, which oozes with phony outrage:
We are alarmed that an American president would advocate for the forcible removal and permanent displacement of two million people. Such an act would not only be morally indefensible, but it would also violate the Geneva Convention.
Have they forgotten that the Democratic Biden-Harris administration sent at least $22.76 billion in money and weapons to Israel? With this murderous largesse, the Israelis bombed 95% of Gaza’s schools, all its universities, and carried out 650 confirmed attacks on hospitals, killing no fewer than 1,000 healthcare workers.
The war’s true death toll is yet to be calculated, but could approach 200,000—with women and children making up nearly 70% of the dead. Now, leading members of the blood-drenched Democratic Party dare to deliver hypocritical homilies about what is and is not morally defensible.
The liberal New York Times has similar, equally cynical concerns. “Trump’s proposal . . . would unquestionably be a severe violation of international law,” it wrote on February 11. The same article quotes Janina Dill of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict: “Trump is just casually making major international crimes into policy proposals.”
Don’t these words apply equally to Biden? When he was in power, the Times was apparently not so worried about “international crimes.” Instead, it churned out such blatantly pro-Israel propaganda that the producers of their own podcast, The Daily, “questioned how solid the underlying evidence was.”
The fate of Palestine
Trump’s vision of transforming Gaza into a playground for the idle rich will almost certainly not materialize. But the Zionist war machine—with the full support of American imperialism—will continue to pursue its genocidal design to rid historic Palestine of as many Palestinians as possible. The changing whims of Janus-faced liberalism will do nothing whatsoever to stop it.
For nearly a century, the Palestinian people have provided humanity with a heroic example of resistance and resilience. But they cannot defeat Zionist imperialism through their own efforts alone. Nothing short of a worldwide communist revolution can end the nightmare. Only the united strength of the working class, in the Middle East, and across the world, can liberate Palestine from imperialism, Zionism, and liberalism.
