It is with profound shock and grief that we have learned of the death of our comrade and friend, Nicholas Cannon, after a tragic car accident on the evening of Monday, August 24. He was born on December 14, 1999, and is survived by his family, girlfriend, friends, and comrades.
Since January, Nick had been a member of the Revolutionary Communists of America, and had committed to mastering the Marxist method and building the revolutionary leadership for the socialist transformation of society. As we struggled side by side with him in life, so will we honor him in death by continuing his fight.
In his 26 years of life, Nick endured many personal hardships which drove him to conclude that the only way to permanently eradicate social ills such as homelessness, hunger, addiction, and want is to completely root them out at the source. That means overthrowing the capitalist system and organizing a rationally and democratically planned socialist economy, in the interest of the working-class majority instead of in the blind pursuit of billionaire profits.
On a planet with such enormous productive capacity, it makes absolutely no sense for there not to be a shoe on every foot, a meal in every belly, a shirt on every back, and a roof over every head. Having experienced the horrors of life under capitalism firsthand, Nick fought for a world where nobody else would have to experience the destitution wrought by this rotten system ever again.
Among his last words to comrades was a message: “I hope you know I’m committed to being the best I can for the RCA.” Nick’s comrades will remember him as a young man genuinely dedicated to learning, reading, discussing, and participating in the work of building the Party to the very best of his ability.
His characteristically unique sense of humor always brightened the room and brought smiles to our faces. We can never forget his ceaselessly eccentric diet soda drink situation—not to mention his passion for creating electronic music to share with friends.
Nick was brimming with compassion for animals big and small, and his empathy for all people downtrodden by capitalism knew no bounds. Ever a welcoming and kind presence, Nick’s unwavering optimism was an inspiration that will live on in our memories of him. We are grateful for having gotten to know that side of our dear comrade before his premature passing.
We, the comrades of the Revolutionary Communist International, extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to Nick’s family and friends, who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly.
