While I was in Eugene, OR this past weekend coaching at a collegiate debate tournament, I sold 3 copies of The Communist to coaches representing other universities. Despite being bombarded with postmodern ideas dominating “higher education,” many overworked and under-compensated academic workers are hungry for Marxist ideas!
One had recently relocated to Seattle. We sat and discussed the election. After a while, she started to wonder aloud, “Should I join the RCA?”
“Absolutely!” I replied. We arranged for her to meet with one of her local communist cells ASAP.
I also met a fellow member of the RCA who’s trying to launch a new communist cell in his area. On the crisis of reformism, he explained that at the height of the Sanders movement, even “vote blue no matter who” liberals like his father were pulled to the left. But since Sanders’ capitulation, he’s been drawn back into the orbit of the Democratic Party, and others are even giving Trumpism a try. This is why we a mass communist party as an unwavering point of reference for the working class. We talked about people he knew that might be interested in genuine communist ideas, and I left him with a few copies of the paper to sell and discuss with these potential recruits.
On my way out of town, I stopped at the store. The clerk commented on my old Socialist Revolution t-shirt. I asked if they were a communist, to which they said, “Yes, but don’t tell my boss!” I gave them a Class War 2024 leaflet and a sticker (both of which I was keeping in my pocket for just such an occasion). They thanked me and said they’d definitely be following up using the QR code soon!
